Congratulations on getting a new puppy!
Here are some important things to teach your puppy:
Potty Training: Your puppy needs to be taught where to eliminate and when to do so. Starting a consistent routine of taking them outside to use the bathroom can help prevent indoor accidents and aid in their potty training.
Socialization: It is crucial to expose your puppy to different environments, people, and other animals. Socialization helps your puppy grow into a well-adjusted and confident dog, by reducing the likelihood of future aggression and anxiety.
Develop a good relationship by having simple clear guidelines while teaching your pup that pleasing you is a great thing to do.
Bite Inhibition: Puppies learn about the world through their mouth which leads to a lot of biting and mouthing behaviour. Note when your puppy is at its most nippy- when tired, excited, after being separated It is important to teach your puppy how to use their mouths appropriately. Teach your puppy that when they bite the fun stops- so freeze and when release start the game again. With consistent training, your puppy will learn “bite inhibition,” which is learning to use their mouths softly.
Handling and Grooming: Pups should learn how to tolerate being handled for grooming, nail trims, bathing and veterinary exams. Making handling and grooming experiences positive, reduces the anxiety and stress involved when grooming and veterinary care is required.
Crate Training: Crate training provides your puppy with a safe and comfortable space. It also helps with their potty training and prevents destructive behavior. Introducing your puppy to the crate slowly and with positive reinforcement will associate the crate with safety and relaxation[^1,4].
Remember training is a lifetime skill for your puppy, and consistency and positive reinforcement will keep your puppy engaged and motivated. With patience and persistence, your puppy will learn to be a great companion and well-behaved dog
